In ancient times, Sri Lanka was known by a variety of names. Every country that captured it had the pleasure in the renaming it . Lately for whatever political reasons even some presidents have tried renaming it but Sri Lanka has stuck and the word itself comes from Sanskrit meaning as follows: Sri meaning "venerable" and Lanka meaning “island”. Hence, the venerable island.
